Canadian—French relations have been recently marked by high levels of military and economic co-operation but also by periods of diplomatic discord, primarily over the status of Quebec. In , the British controlled Newfoundland , Nova Scotia , Northern and much of Western Canada , but otherwise, nearly all of Eastern Canada , from the Labrador shore and on the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes and beyond was under French domination. After the British conquest, French immigration to Canada continued on a small scale until the start of the wars between France and Britain from to French books circulated widely, and the French Revolution led many conservative refugees to seek asylum in Canada. The English-speaking population of Canada also grew rapidly after the American Revolution.

Mr Antoine Bondaz, who works at the Foundation for Strategic Research, has been engaged in a war of words with the embassy over its attempts to dissuade French members of Parliament from visiting Taiwan. Last Friday March 19 , the embassy called China expert Mr Bondaz a "little thug", prompting a flurry of criticism from other researchers and MPs. On Sunday, the embassy doubled down, tweeting that those who "portray themselves as researchers and members of the media and who furiously attack China" were "crazy hyenas". That period is well and truly over," the embassy wrote. China's ambassador to France Lu Shaye has frequently made headlines for his tirades against those who criticise Beijing.
